What Is Prison Life?

Prison Life is a prison management sim with idle mechanics, built by Supercent and playable free in your browser. You are not the guard walking the block — you are the warden signing the cheques. Intake, meals, work rosters, staffing and expansion all land on your desk, and every dollar you make goes straight back into better facilities. The idle half is what keeps it running: your mine keeps producing and your inmates keep working after you close the tab, so there is always a payout waiting the next time you log in. Earn, upgrade, rank up, unlock, repeat — each rank opens rooms and upgrade tiers that were locked a moment ago, so the next milestone always sits just out of reach.

How to Play Prison Life

Move — WASD or the arrow keys on desktop, the on-screen stick on mobile.
Interact — step onto a highlighted pad on the floor to buy, upgrade or unlock whatever it is marked with.
Collect — walk near a stack of cash and it is picked up automatically.

Nothing here needs memorising. Every purchase is painted on the floor with its price, and standing on the pad is how you pay. Short on funds? The meter fills for as long as you stay put, so you can leave a partial payment and come back for the rest later.

Your first ten minutes: put every starter inmate to work before anything else — an idle prisoner earns you nothing. Buy the kitchen upgrade before any cosmetic. Hire your first officer the moment the pad unlocks. Then bank whatever is left and drive straight at the first rank-up, because rank is the real gate on progress.

Prison Life Tips and Strategy

Raise income before capacity. Buying cells too early is the classic way to stall out. Every extra inmate is another mouth to feed and another body your officers have to watch, so if your earnings per prisoner are still thin, doubling the population only doubles the trouble. Push the mine and your production rooms first, then add beds.

The kitchen is your hidden ceiling. Food quietly caps everything else. An underfed block slows down, morale slips and output drops with no warning on screen. Keep kitchen throughput a step ahead of your headcount and most other problems never surface at all.

Officers pay for themselves. Staff look expensive when the balance is thin, so new players skip them. Don't. An understaffed prison bleeds efficiency in ways the interface never spells out, and one officer usually clears their own cost well before the next rank-up. Upgrade the ones you have instead of hiring wide.

Go deep, not wide. Nudging five rooms up one tier each feels productive and achieves almost nothing. Idle games reward depth. Pick whichever room earns most, pour everything into it until the next tier is out of reach, and only then move on — you will hit rank thresholds noticeably sooner.

Spend offline earnings on arrival. Collect, buy something, and only then start playing. Money sitting in your balance earns nothing; the entire point of the idle timer is funding the upgrade you couldn't afford last session.

Chase rank, not savings. Your balance is a means, not a score. Ranking up unlocks rooms and upgrade ceilings strictly better than anything on sale at your current tier, so hoarded cash is cash working at the wrong rate. When in doubt, spend toward the next rank.

Facility Priority Guide

Kitchen — feeds inmates and stops production stalling. Highest priority: upgrade it early and keep coming back to it.
Mine — turns prisoner labour into your main income stream. High priority, and the engine your whole economy runs on.

Gym — lifts morale and keeps the block manageable. Medium priority, best handled before your population spikes.
Visiting Room — raises satisfaction and takes the edge off unrest. Medium priority, scale it alongside headcount.
Cells — raise how many inmates you can hold. Leave these until income per inmate is genuinely solid.
